Atomic and molecular spectroscopy -general concepts; lifetime measurements. Experimental techniques in optical spectroscopy: monochromators and spectrometers; light sources; photon detectors; spectral and radiometric calibration of the detection set-up; Colored glass filters; neutral and interference filters; single photon detection . Experimental techniques used in x-ray spectroscopy. Module 2: Basics of Fourier Optics: wave equation in frequency and temporal domains, the plane wave spectrum, property of Fourier transform of a lens, an object truncation and Gibbs phenomenon, Fourier analysis and functional decomposition, coherence and Fourier transform , 4f correlator and applications (spatial filtering, correlation optics, computer-generated holograms, interferometry, atomic traps, quantum computation, phase contrast microscopy, Fraunholer and Fresnel diffraction).
